Hodegetria an iconographical depiction of the Virgin and Child in which the Virgin with her right hand indicates the Child, who is on her left arm; the word is Greek, and means ‘The Indicator of the Way’.

According to tradition the arrangement follows that of a painting originally attributed to St Luke, but the earliest surviving example is probably to be assigned to the 7th century.
