Born Nancy Eileen Holden, Nov 12, 1912, in South Australia, Australia; 2nd dau. of Edward (later Sir) Holden (major founder of the Australian auto industry) and Hilda May Holden; attended Adelaide University; m. Frank Charles Buttfield (company director) Feb 19, 1936; children: 2 sons.
A Liberal, stood unsuccessfully for the federal seat of Adelaide (1954); when a federal senate vacancy was created by the death of Senator George McLeay (1955), was nominated by State Parliament and became South Australia's 1st female Member of Parliament; served as a senator for over 16 years. Named DBE (1972).
