Bauer, Marion (1887–1955)
Bauer, Marion (1887–1955)
American composer, teacher, and co-founder of the American Music Guild. Born Marion Eugenie in Walla Walla, Washington, on August 15, 1887; died in South Hadley, Massachusetts, on August 9, 1955
Marion Bauer studied in Portland, Oregon, before going to Berlin and Paris where she studied with Nadia Boulanger as well as others. On returning from Europe, she taught at New York University, becoming an associate professor in 1930. In 1940, she was appointed to the faculty of the Juilliard School where she served until 1944. Bauer, an enthusiastic proponent of American music, had co-founded the American Music Guild in 1921. Throughout her career, she continued to compose, writing over 30 pieces, and her music remained impressionist, perhaps an influence of her studies in Paris. Bauer also wrote regularly for music journals, establishing herself as a writer in her field.
