See index for CA sketch: Born March 2, 1932, in Riverside, IL; died in an automobile accident, March 23, 2004, in Sequim, WA. Photographer and author. Along with her husband, Erwin Bauer, Peggy Bauer was renowned as a wildlife photographer and writer. An alumna of Mount Holyoke College, she married Harry Politi not long after graduating and spent her early life raising a family. When she met Erwin Bauer in Nairobi in 1972, the two made a connection that would lead them both to divorce their first spouses and marry each other. Erwin was already a renowned photographer at the time, but Peggy learned quickly and the two became an inseparable team, traveling the world and taking pictures of exotic wildlife. Together, they collaborated on dozens of books, including Photographing Wild Texas (1985), Wild Africa (1992), and The Last Big Cats: An Untamed Spirit (2003). The husband-and-wife team were also active in conservation organizations and received writing and photography awards, most recently the 2000 Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Nature Photography Association.
