SIDELIGHTS: Considered one of the premier wildlife photographers, Erwin Bauer has traveled across America and into many other countries in search of the perfect natural image with his wife and collaborator Peggy. As a youth, Bauer preferred spending his time in the wild lands adjoining his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. After finishing his stint in the Army as a decorated soldier, Bauer became an outdoors columnist for the Irontown Tribune, an Ohio paper, while also turning to freelancing. Though he considered himself a writer at that time, Bauer learned to use a camera out of necessity, as many publications demanded original photos to go with text. He drew upon his love of game sports to produce his first book, Bass in America: The Haunts, Habits, and Other Secrets of One of the World's Finest Fresh-Water Game Fish, in 1955. This volume went on to sell out its entire 7,500 first printing.

Following Bauer's 1972 marriage to Grace "Peggy" Reid, herself an accomplished photographer, the couple set out on a life of outdoor adventure, hunting animals with their cameras. Together they have produced numerous volumes aimed at both adult and youth audiences, usually with a conservationist's slant. Of Bears: Behavior, Ecology, Conservation, Wayne Trimm of New York State Conservationist said: "It is obvious that the Bauers are very pro-bear . . . [they] consider bears to be very intelligent animals with unusually keen senses." The book also lists the best places to find and photograph the animals, along with a safety guide to avoid unpleasant bear encounters. The "tough, resilient" whitetail deer, as American Forests writer Carl Reidel described it, is the focus of the Bauers' Whitetails: Behavior, Ecology, Conservation. Erwin Bauer's text covers the evolution and habits of the deer, leading Reidel to remark that this book "is, in the best sense of the word, an amateur's textbook—a 'lover's' textbook. It will charm and inform the most ardent deer watcher, hunter, or lover."

Similarly, the photo volume Wild Dogs: The Wolves, Coyotes, and Foxes of North America seeks to dispel some of the stereotypes of the continent's carnivorous canines. Kristin Hostetter of Backpacker recommended this Bauer book as one that "instills respect and understanding of these elusive animals."
