Adam, Jean (1710–1765)

Scottish poet. Name variations: Mrs. Jane Adam; Mrs. Jane Adams. Born 1710 in Crawfordsdyke, Renfrewshire, Scotland; died April 3, 1765, in Glasgow.

Orphaned young; employed as governess; began publishing poems by subscription under title Miscellany Poems, by Mrs. Jane Adams, in Crawfordsdyke (1734); shortly thereafter, opened a girls' school in Crawford Bridge; when poems didn't sell, had to close school and resort to peddling; died in a poorhouse in Glasgow.
