Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein

1751-1829

German artist known as "Goethe" because of his celebrated portrait Goethe in the Campagna (1787). Tischbein began his career as a portrait painter but was equally well known for his engravings of classical antiquities. He studied art in Paris and then in Italy, where he was named Director of the Naples Academy of Art (1789). In 1799 Tischbein returned to his native Germany, where he developed an interest in German Romanticism before his death in 1829.
