Johann Ernst, Prince of Weimar, German violinist and composer; b. Weimar, 1696; d. Frankfurt am Main, Aug. 1, 1715. He showed much promise as a child and, at a very early age, was given violin lessons by the court musician G. Eilenstein. At 10 he began keyboard instruction with J.G. Walther, and after attending the Univ. of Utrecht, he returned to Weimar in 1713 to study composition with Walther. Telemann, Bach, and Matthe--on held him in high esteem. Telemann publ, his 6 violin concertos, op.l, in 1718, and Bach prepared keyboard concerto arrangements utilizing four of his scores.
