Hermann Hankel

1839-1873

German mathematician who developed the Hankel functions, variations on the Bessel function. Hankel also worked on complex numbers, the history of mathematics, and function theory during his mathematical career, but his most important work was his theory of complex number systems in which he introduced and expanded on Hermann Grassmann's ideas in these areas. The Hankel transformation is also widely used in the study of functions.
