George D. Snell
1903-1996
American geneticist whose pioneering research helped decipher the complex genetics of the immune system. His work in defining the genes that determine whether a body accepts or rejects organs paved the way for modern transplants. Snell was co-recipient of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Medicine, along with Baruj Benacerraf and Jean Dausset, for discoveries in genetics and immunological reactions.
