Erich Dagobert von Drygalski
1865-1949
German explorer who began what was to become a lengthy expedition to Antarctica in August 1901. His ship became icebound the following February and remained there a year before the ice broke up enough for the ship to begin its return trip. While trapped in the ice, Drygalski led several land expeditions and became the first person to fly in a balloon over Antarctica.
