French paleontologist and archeologist credited with the discovery of more than 90 genera and species of fossil mammals and reptiles recovered from the tertiary terrain of Gers, France. His excavations at cave sites in central France provided definitive proof that human beings co-existed with extinct prehistoric animals The products of these excavations served as the foundation for the science of prehistory, supporting the evolutionary account of human development.
