Anna Johnson Pell Wheeler

1883-1966

American mathematician who contributed to the study of integral equations and infinite dimensional linear spaces. After completing an undergraduate degree in mathematics at the University of South Dakota, Wheeler earned a M.A. at the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1909. She subsequently taught at Mount Holyoke College and Bryn Mawr, where she remained until her retirement in 1948. Wheeler received numerous honors and in 1927 became the first woman to deliver the prestigious Colloquium Lecture at the annual meeting of the American Mathematical Society.
