tinder fungus
tinder fungus (hoof fungus) The common name for the fruit bodies of Fomes fomentarius. These are hoof-shaped; the upper surface is pale brown or greyish-brown with concentric furrows, while the tubes on the underside are pale becoming brown. The spore print is white. In Britain, tinder fungus is found usually on birch trees and occurs mostly in Scotland and northern England; in northern Europe and the USA it is common on beech and other trees.
