Tinel, Edgar (Pierre Joseph)
Tinel, Edgar (Pierre Joseph), Belgian pianist, pedagogue, and composer; b. Sinaii, East Flanders, March 27, 1854; d. Brussels, Oct. 28, 1912. He was taught at first by his father, a schoolmaster and organist, then entered the Brussels Cons. in 1863 as a pupil of Brassin, Dupont, Gevaert, Kufferath, and Mailly; in 1873 he took 1st prize for piano playing and in 1877 won the Belgian Prix de Rome with the cantata De Klokke Roeland. In 1881 he became director of the Malines Inst, of Religious Music; was appointed to the staff of the Brussels Cons. in 1896, and in 1908 became its director. He publ. Le Chant grégorien: Théorie sommaire de son exécution (Mechelen, 1890). Among his works were the operas Godelieve (Brussels, July 22, 1897) and Katharina (Brussels, Feb. 27, 1909) and the oratorio Franciscu (Mechelen, 1888).
