Scomberesocidae (saury, skipper; subclass Actinopterygii, order Atheriniformes) A small family of marine, pelagic fish that have a very slender body, produced and beak-like jaws, and the dorsal and anal fins located near the tail fin and followed by a series of small finlets. Where locally abundant, they are exploited commercially, and they may well be an important source of food for larger predatory fish. Scomberesox saurus (skipper or Atlantic saury) occurs in warmer seas world-wide; Cololabis saira (Pacific saury) is believed to occur only in the Pacific basin. There are about four species.
