Scoles, Joseph John
Scoles, Joseph John (1798–1863). English RC architect. He became interested in medieval architecture through the influence of John Carter. He travelled in Sicily, Greece, Egypt, and Syria with Joseph Bonomi jun. before setting up in practice in 1826. He planned Gloucester Terrace, Regent's Park, London, with the basic elevational treatment by Nash. He is best known for his RC churches, which were mostly in the Gothic style, although some were Romanesque, and a few were Classical. His churches include St Peter, Stonyhurst College, Lancs. (1832–5—Gothic), St Ignatius, Preston, Lancs. (1833–6—Gothic), St James, Colchester, Essex (1837—Romanesque), St John, Duncan Terrace, Islington, London (1841–3—Romanesque), Prior Park College Church, Bath, Som. (1844–6—Classical), St Francis Xavier, Liverpool (1845–9—Gothic), and his masterpiece, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street, Mayfair, London (1846–9—Gothic). He also designed the residential buildings for the Oratory, Brompton, London (1849–53), and the chapel, Ince Blundell Hall, Lancs. (1858–9—Classical).
