Meckel's cartilage

views updated

Meckel's cartilage In mammalian embryos, a cartilaginous rod derived from the first visceral arch (mandibular arch). It runs along the dorsal surface of the mandible (otherwise a membrane bone) and parts of it ossify as the malleus and incus. Its particular interest is its duplication of the processes by which the mandibular and ear bones evolved during the transition from reptiles to mammals.
