Měchura, Leopold Eugen, Bohemian composer; b. Prague, Feb. 2, 1804; d. Votin, near Klatovy, Feb. 11, 1870. He received training in law and philosophy at the Univ. of Prague, and in composition from Tomaschek and B. Weber. A concert of his works in Prague (March 22, 1868) brought him wide recognition. Měchura was one of the leading representatives of the Czech national school of his era. Among his works were the opera Marie Potock´ (1869; Prague, Jan. 13, 1871), 6 syms., 16 string quartets, and the cantatas Proěeb na Kanku (Burial on Kank Hill; 1866) and ètëdry den (Christmas Eve; 1867).
