Lagerstroemia
Lagerstroemia (family Lythraceae) A genus of trees in which the leaves are opposite, with conspicuous, pointed, axillary buds. The flowers are held in big terminal panicles and are showy, purple to pink in colour, with 6 crinkled petals and many stamens. The fruits are woody capsules seated on a persistent calyx. Several species are widely planted as showy ornamentals. L. speciosa also produces the timber pyinma, which is ring-porous and prized for boat-building. There are 53 species, occurring from India to northern Australia. They are most common in seasonally dry South-east Asia.
