Doryphora (family Monimiaceae) A genus of 2 species, endemic (see ENDEMISM) to Australia. D. sassafras (Australian or New South Wales sassafras) is a tall tree, up to 30m, with elliptical leaves up to 7 cm long and toothed. The tree produces white flowers in winter. Both the bark and leaves are fragrant, and provide aromatic oils used in perfume. It occurs as a dominant in the rain forests of Queensland and New South Wales or as an understorey to eucalypts in drier habitats.
