Cryptodira (hidden-necked turtles; subclass Anapsida, order Chelonia) A suborder of chelonians which withdraw the head straight back into the shell by flexing the neck vertically. There are 10 families, including marine, freshwater, and terrestrial forms, and they are cosmopolitan, except for Australia.
