Carettochelyidae (pitted-shell turtle; order Chelonia, suborder Cryptodira) A monospecific family (Carettochelys insculpta) of turtles found in the rivers of southern New Guinea. The bony shell is complete, but skin-covered, lacking horny scales. The nose has a short breathing proboscis, but lung respiration is supplemented by cutaneous surfaces. The family is believed to be intermediate between Emydidae and Trionychidae.
