Bregmacerotidae (codlets; subclass Actinopterygii, order Gadiformes) A small family of marine, oceanic, warm-water fish that have an elongate body, deeply notched dorsal and anal fins, the first dorsal ray reduced to one long spine on the head, and outer pectoral-fin rays trailing beside the body. The seven species are of world-wide distribution. Although not a true deep-sea fish, the Indo-Pacific Bregmaceros macclellandi (up to 12 cm long) has been caught at depths exceeding 500 m.
