Brehme, Hans (Ludwig Wilhelm)

Brehme, Hans (Ludwig Wilhelm), German composer; b. Potsdam, March 10, 1904; d. Stuttgart, Nov. 10, 1957. He studied piano in Berlin with Wilhelm Kempff, taught at Stuttgart and elsewhere. A highly diligent composer, he wrote music in many genres; the idiom of his compositions is fundamentally Classical, with a generous admixture of moderately modern harmonies. He wrote an opera, Der Uhrmacher von Strass-burg (1941), an operetta, Versiegelten Biirgermeister (1944), 2 syms., 2 piano concertos, Flute Concerto, Triptycon for Orch., on a theme by Handel (highly successful), Sextet for Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Violin, Viola, and Cello, Clarinet Quintet, Saxophone Sonata, and several works for Accordion.
