Ashby, Eric (1904–92)A British botanist who held many public offices and professorships at the Universities of Sydney and Manchester. He was president, vice-chancellor, and chancellor (1970–83) of Queen's University, Belfast, master of Clare College, Cambridge, and vice-chancellor of Cambridge University (1967–9). Lord Ashby chaired the working party on environmental pollution in preparation for the UN Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972, and was a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He wrote two books on environmental topics: Reconciling Man with the Environment (1978) and (with Mary Anderson) The Politics of Clean Air (1981).
