Archontophoenix (family Palmae) A genus of palms in which the trunk is solitary and hoop-marked and the leaves are pinnate, with a conspicuous crown-shaft, below which the much-branched pendulous inflorescences appear. There are 2 species, native to subtropical eastern Australia and widely planted as stately ornamentals. A. alexandrae (the king palm) is of very similar general appearance to Dictyosperma album (see DICTYOSPERMA).
