UNGER, JOSEF
UNGER, JOSEF (1828–1913), Austrian statesman and jurist. Unger converted to Christianity at a young age. He was appointed professor of jurisprudence at the University of Vienna in 1857. He entered parliament in 1867, was minister without portfolio 1871–79, and president of the Supreme Court in 1881. His principal work, System des Oesterreichischen Allgemeinen Privatrechts (6 vols., 1856–64) gained him a European reputation.
