LULAV

LULAV (Heb. לוּלָב; "a shoot" or "a young branch of a tree"), a term applied in the Mishnah to all trees, e.g., "the lulavim of the terebinth, the pistachio, and the thorn" (Shev. 7:5) and to the vine (Or. 1:7). Its use, however, was particularly confined to the *palm branch, one of the components of the *Four Species (Arba'ah Minim; cf. Mish., Suk. 3 and 4). Its use in Jewish ritual is on the Feast of *Sukkot.
