LHEVINNE, JOSEF

LHEVINNE, JOSEF (1874–1944), pianist. Born in Orel, Russia, he studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where he also taught (1902–06). In 1906 he settled in the U.S., but sojourned in Berlin from 1907 to 1919. He undertook numerous concert tours, and also gave duo-recitals with his wife, rosina lhevinne (1880–1976), a noted pianist in her own right. Josef Lhevinne excelled in the interpretation of the romantic composers, and was among the major concert artists of his time. Rosina Lhevinne became especially known as a piano teacher, and many of the U.S.-born pianists who rose to prominence in the 1940s and 1950s were her pupils.
