Lhévinne, Rosina née Bessie)

Lhévinne, Rosina née Bessie), distinguished Russian pianist and pedagogue; b. Kiev, March 28,1880; d. Glendale, Calif., Nov. 9,1976. She graduated from the Moscow Cons, in 1898, winning the gold medal, the same year she married Josef Lhévinne. She appeared as a soloist in Vienna (1910), St. Petersburg (1911), and Berlin (1912), then remained in Berlin with her husband through World War I. In 1919 they went to the U.S., where they opened a music studio. She also taught at the Juilliard Graduate School in N.Y. (from 1922), and later privately. Among her famous students were Van Cliburn, Mischa Dichter, John Browning, and Garrick Ohlsson.
