GOUGENOT DES MOUSSEAUX, HENRI°
GOUGENOT DES MOUSSEAUX, HENRI ° (1805–1876), French antisemitic writer. A Catholic aristocrat who called himself "a soldier of Christ," Gougenot des Mousseaux was obsessed with demons and Jews. He is chiefly known for Le Juif, le judaïsme et la judaïsation des peuples chrétiens (1869). Published on the eve of the first Vatican council with the blessing of Pope *Pius ix, it was influential in Conservative circles in France before *Drumont's France Juive. The theme of the book is an alleged Jewish conspiracy to destroy Christianity and rule the world by means of 18th-century Liberalism and *Freemasonry. Translations appeared in 1876 in Austria and Romania, and a second edition was published in France in 1886.
