FRIEDE, SHALOM

FRIEDE, SHALOM (1783–1854), Dutch ?azzan. Born in Amsterdam, he served as ?azzan from 1809 until his death. His collection of about 200 melodies for various prayers, preserved in manuscript form at the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, added considerably to the knowledge of Polish cantoral and hasidic music. Of this collection, 15 melodies were published by A.Z. Idelsohn in O?ar Neginot Yisrael. His preference for Polish and ?asidic chants is reflected in his own compositions.
