AYMARD, BL.
Third abbot of Cluny; d. Cluny, Oct. 5, 965. He was elected between April 21 and June 13, 942 to succeed St. odo of cluny, whose work in the cluniac reform he continued. During his short administration the possessions of cluny increased considerably. In 948 Pope Agapetus II confirmed the direct dependence of Cluny and its dependencies on the Apostolic See. Because he had become blind, Aymard resigned his office in 948, having provided for the election of majolus of cluny as fourth abbot. In 1063 peter damian collected the oral testimony of Aymard's patience, simplicity, and humility.
Feast: Oct. 5 (Benedictines).
