ABDISHO IV (EBEDJESU), CHALDEAN PATRIARCH

Abdisho IV (15551567) was a monk and bishop of Gezirah, Mesopotamia (upper Tigris), when he succeeded the Patriarch John Sulaqa. He journeyed to Rome (1561), where he was recognized and given the pallium by Pope Pius IV (April 17, 1562). His profession of faith was read at the Council of trent (Sept. 14, 1562). He consecrated many bishops. The Portuguese opposed his attempt to bring the Thomas Christians of India under his jurisdiction. He composed hymns in the honor of his predecessors who were martyred.
