Luwum, Janani
Luwum, Janani (1922–77). Christian archbishop of Uganda and martyr. Son of a Christian convert, he became involved for a time with Balokole (see EAST AFRICAN REVIVAL), but moved away to mainstream Christianity, and was ordained Anglican priest in 1955. He became bishop of N. Uganda in 1969. After the Acholi massacres under Idi Amin in 1972, he became an increasingly outspoken opponent of Amin's excesses and cruelties, until he was himself arrested and shot.
