al-Shibli, Abū Bakr Dulaf b. Jahdar
al-Shibli, Abū Bakr Dulaf b. Jahdar (c.861–945 (AH 247–334)). Sūfī mystic of Baghdād. He was originally a high government official but turned to the mystic life at the age of 40. Although he belonged to al-Junaid's sober school of Sufism, he distinguished himself as an extreme and eccentric Sūfī, whose excessive behaviours and practices (e.g. rubbing salt in his eyes to prevent sleep) led to his committal to a lunatic asylum, where he would offer discourses on the Sūfī way to distinguished visitors. His tomb in Baghdād is still venerated.
