Suhl
Suhl (zōōl), city (1994 pop. 52,386), Thuringia, central Germany. It is an industrial city manufacturing precision instruments, machinery, sporting guns, tools, electrical appliances, toys, porcelain, and motor vehicles. First mentioned in the 13th cent., Suhl was a noted center of the German arms industry in the Thirty Years War (1618–48). From 1952 until shortly before German reunification in 1990, Suhl was also the name given to the district surrounding the city, of which the city was the capital.
