Piscataqua (pĬskăt´əkwə, –kwā), navigable river, 12 mi (19 km) long, formed by the junction of the Cocheco and the Salmon Falls rivers, SE N.H., and flowing SE to Portsmouth harbor, forming part of the N.H.-Maine border. The tidal harbor from Portsmouth to the Atlantic Ocean is one of the finest in the United States and is the site of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (est. 1800).
