Ed Miliband (Edward Samuel Miliband), 1969–, British political leader, b. London, grad. Oxford, London School of Economics. A member of the Labour party and a close associate of Gordon Brown, the chancellor of the exchequer and later prime minister, Miliband chaired the Treasury's council of economic advisers and won election to Parliament in 2005. In 2008 he became secretary of the newly created Dept. of Energy and Climate Change. After Labour lost the 2010 elections and Brown resigned as party leader, Miliband, his brother David (the former foreign secretary), and three others vied for the leadership post; the brothers emerged as the leading candidates. Garnering labor union support with his opposition to the deep public spending cuts proposed by new Conservative–Liberal Democrat government, Ed Miliband was narrowly elected party leader, but after Labor did poorly in the 2015 elections he stepped down from the post.
