University of Kentucky, mainly at Lexington; coeducational; land-grant and state supported; opened 1865 as part of Kentucky Univ., became a separate state agricultural and mechanical college in 1878 and a university in 1908. Research facilities include the Computational Sciences Center and the Center for Robotics. There are extension centers throughout the state.
