English Bazar (băzär´), town (1991 pop. 177,164), West Bengal state, E central India, on the Mahananda River. The British East India Company established (1676) factories for the production of silk and cotton fabrics, for which the town is still known. It is the administrative center for a district where jute is the chief crop, and mulberries and mangoes are grown.
