Luanda
Luanda Capital, chief port, and largest city of Angola, on the Atlantic coast of sw Africa. First settled by the Portuguese in 1575, its economy thrived on the shipment of more than 3 million slaves to Brazil until the abolition of slavery in the 19th century. Today, it exports crops from the province of Luanda. Industries: oil refining, metalworking, building materials, textiles, paper, oil products. Pop. (1995) 2,250,000.
