Rasputin, Grigori Yefimovich
Rasputin, Grigori Yefimovich (1872–1916) Russian peasant mystic. Rasputin exercised great influence at the court of Nicholas II because of his apparent ability to cure Crown Prince Alexis' haemophilia. He attracted suspicion because of his advocacy of sexual ecstasy as a means of religious salvation. Rasputin was poisoned by a group of nobles in 1916, and when this failed, he was shot and drowned.
