Sánchez de Tagle, Francisco Manuel (1782–1847)

Francisco Manuel Sánchez de Tagle (b. 11 January 1782; d. 17 December 1847), a politician. In 1794 Sánchez, a native of Valladolid, entered the Colegio de San Juan de Letrán in Mexico City. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy and theology and was appointed to the chair of philosophy in 1803. He was active in politics, becoming regidor perpetuo of the Ayuntamiento of Mexico from 1805 to 1812 and from 1815 to 1820. Because of his autonomist leanings, Sánchez became a member of the secret society Los Guadalupes, and he participated in the elections resulting from the Constitution of Cádiz; he was elected constitutional regidor in 1813 and in 1820. In 1821 he signed the Declaration of Independence, and he was a member of the Provisional Governing Junta. Sánchez remained active in politics after independence; he was elected deputy on various occasions as well as senator, vice governor of the state of Mexico, governor of the state of Michoacán, and secretary of the Supreme Conservative Power. In addition, he was one of the best-known members of the escocés (Scottish-rite Masons) party. At his death, he was director of the national pawnbrokerage.
