Sabatini, Gabriela (1970–)

The Argentine tennis player Gabriela Beatriz Sabatini was born May 16, 1970 in Buenos Aires. Sabatini took up tennis at age six, won her first tournament at eight, rose to be the world's number-one ranked junior player in 1984, and turned professional the next year, when she became the youngest woman ever to reach the singles semifinals of the French Open. Before her retirement in October 1996, she collected twenty-seven singles titles, including the U.S. Open in 1990, and twelve doubles titles, rose to the number three world ranking, and amassed almost $9 million in winnings. Energetic, attractive, and popular, Sabatini was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006. Her focus during the late 1990s and early 2000s was her expanding line of perfumes.
