Gutiérrez, Eulalio (1880–1939)

Eulalio Gutiérrez (b. 1880; d. 12 August 1939), Mexican revolutionary and convention president. Gutiérrez was born of a peasant family on the Hacienda Santo Domingo in the village of Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, and was a shepherd in his youth. He later became a miner for the Mazapil Copper Company of Concepción del Oro, in Zacatecas.

Gutiérrez became a member of Ricardo Flores Magón's Liberal Party in 1906, and in 1909 he joined the group opposing the reelection of Porfirio Díaz to the presidency. With his brother Luis Gutiérrez, he supported Francisco Madero in 1910. In 1913 he joined the Constitutionalists, rising to military commander of San Luis Potosí in 1914. On November 3 of that year, at the Convention of Aguascalientes, he was selected by the representatives of the leading military commanders to serve as their president, a post he held until 16 January 1915.

The Convention failed, however, to obtain the support of all the victorious revolutionaries, and the Constitutionalists split their support between Venustiano Carranza on the one hand and Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata on the other. Gutiérrez opposed both Carranza and Villa during 1915, and the following year went into exile. After returning to Mexico, he served as a senator from Coahuila in the 1920s, but left Mexico again after supporting the unsuccessful Escobar rebellion of 1929 by followers of the recently assassinated Álvaro Obregón. He retired permanently from politics thereafter.
