Gutiérrez Heras, Joaquín, Mexican composer;b. Tehuacan, Sept. 28, 1927. He attended classes in architecture at the National Univ. of Mexico and then studied composition with Bias Galindo and Rodolfo Halffter at the National Cons, of Mexico (1950-52). A scholarship from the French Inst. of Mexico enabled him to go to Paris, where he took courses in composition with Messiaen, Rivier, and Dandelot at the Paris Cons. (1952-53); on a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship, he studied composition with Bergsma and Persichetti at the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y. (1960-61). Upon his return to Mexico, he gave radio lectures and taught theory. As a composer, he professed a“voluntary lack of complexity/’
