Gallet, Luciano (1893–1931)
Luciano Gallet (b. 28 June 1893; d. 29 October 1931), Brazilian composer and musicologist. In 1913 Gallet enrolled in the Instituto Nacional de Música, where he studied piano with Henrique Oswald and harmony with Agnelo França. His first compositions were in a romantic or impressionistic style, but contact with Mário de Andrade resulted in serious studies of Brazilian popular and folk music. Some of Gallet's earliest works consisted of harmonizations and arrangements of folk songs. It is significant that Mário de Andrade, the most important figure in the emerging nationalist movement in music, considered Gallet's research and studies sufficiently significant to arrange for the publication of Gallet's Estudos de folclore. Although Gallet has never been considered a major composer, except possibly in the area of the art song, his influence on Brazilian musical life has been significant in numerous areas, including concerts, teaching, composition, dis-cography, radio, journalism, and folk music. In each endeavor he gave evidence of keen analytical thought and contributed to the development of the musical life of Brazil.
