Independent, university, coed. Awards bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees (undergraduate programs are open primarily to the hearing-impaired). Founded 1864. Setting: 99-acre urban campus. Endowment: $144.3 million. Research spending 2003-04: $5.1 million. Educational spending 2003-04: $25,623 per student. Total enrollment: 1,834. Faculty: 230 (all full-time). Collegiate Environment:
Orientation program. Drama-theater group, student-run newspaper. Social organizations: 30 open to all; national fraternities, national sororities, local fraternities, local sororities; 39% of eligible men and 34% of eligible women are members. Most popular organizations: Student Body Government, Delta Epsilon, Rainbow Society, Black Deaf Student Union. Major annual events: homecoming, RIT/Gallaudet Weekend.
